September 12: National Chocolate Milkshake Day: Without a doubt a treat day! Simple, sweet, and delectable, chocolate milkshakes aren't just one of the best treats of all time, they're also a reminder of our innocence and -- a symbol of America's past-time. A time when getting a milkshake and fries was the perfect date and drive-in movies were all the rage. So put a quarter in the jukebox, join us and say cheers to the best fusion since peanut butter and jelly (which was invented in 1901). The history of milkshakes can be accredited to the development of two key concepts, the electric blender, and malted milk drinks. So to understand the origin of milkshakes, you actually have to look further back to medieval Britain when eggnog came about. Back then it was a hot, milky ale-like drink and milk and eggs were foods of the wealthy so it was often consumed in indulgent celebration. It wasn't until 1885 that somebody had the idea of mixing whiskey, milk, and eggs as an "eggnog type" drink, that milkshakes appeared in history. It originally was a term used for "wholesome drinks" containing chocolate, strawberry, or vanilla syrups. In 1910, Hamilton Beach introduced the Cyclone Drink Mixer, an electric blender that became a prevalent machine used at public businesses. With the invention of the blender, milkshakes began to take their modern, whipped, aerated, and frothy form. And finally in Chicago in 1922, Walgreens employee Ivar "Pop" Coulson made a milkshake by adding two scoops of vanilla ice cream to Walgreens' standard malted milk drink recipe. Termed "Horlick's Malted Milk", this item was featured by the Walgreen drugstore chain as part of a chocolate milkshake, which became known as a "malted" or "malt" and swiftly rose to one of the most popular soda-fountain drinks of its time. September 12: World Dolphin Day: -- A day that Promotes dolphin welfare, fostering understanding, and championing their cause for a thriving marine environment and coexistence with for these beautiful sea mammals who live at risk each day due to human threats. World Dolphin Day provides an excellent opportunity for individuals and organizations to extend care so these animals can live a safe, happy and long life! The inaugural World Dolphin Day was celebrated in 2022 through the efforts of and support of Sea Shepherd Global. This event was established to pay respect to the world's most devastating slaughter of cetaceans (the sea mammal family including dolphins, whales and porpoises) in recorded history. On September 12, 2021, more than 1400 dolphins were killed off the Faroe Islands as part of a cultural tradition. Since the time of that slaughter, the government of the Faroe Islands has been under scrutiny for this brutal practice. While they have set provisional limits on the number of white-sided dolphins that can be killed during this "grind" hunting tradition, the limits remain very generous and this is considered by many to be an empty gesture. Supporters of the dolphins believe that this practice is particularly cruel and outdated and should be stopped altogether. World Dolphin Day is an important time to raise awareness about the plight of these majestic sea creatures, notably because of their endangered status due to human activity. This day is slightly different from National Dolphin Day, which is celebrated in April and typically only observed in the United States. September 12: National Just One Human Family Day: -- Encourages us to reflect on the human race as a single family who share just one planet. In 2001, the world's population - the Earth's family - stood at over 6.2 billion. By 2020, it had grown to 7.8 billion. That's a lot of family sharing one planet. Just One Human Family Day reminds us that, as a human race, we have a responsibility to each other. While we all come from different backgrounds, speak different languages, believe differently, we are all human beings. Our experiences may vary. Even our abilities and weaknesses differ. Another sure thing we share is that we all live on just one planet. Earth. Our brothers, sisters, and neighbors are all part of the human family. Just One Human Family Day strives for 7.8 billion human family members (and growing) to live in harmony on the one planet we have. How do we do that? One way is by singing the song "We Share Just One Planet" by Sarah Stevens and Catherine Marchese. September 12: National Police Woman Day: -- A day that acknowledges and celebrates the contribution of female police officers who enforce law and order around the country. Today only roughly 10% of the police force in the United States is made up of women. National Police Woman Day hopes to rectify that by encouraging more women to join the service. Campaigns and events are organized to urge more women to take up law enforcement roles. Along with expressing gratitude to these officers, the day also hopes for a future where law enforcement bodies will have stronger female representation. The first policewoman in the United States was most likely Marie Owens. She was hired by the Chicago Police Department in 1891. Although police matrons were not a rare sight in prisons in New York City prior to this, they lacked the authority to arrest as Owens did. Alice Wells was hired by the Los Angeles police department in 1910 and was the first American-born woman police officer in the United States. Unlike Wells, Owens had been born in Canada. In 1854, the first police matrons were hired by New York City to search and guard female prisoners, but they were civilians with no law enforcement authority. The role became quite popular among women and many started applying for similar positions in various parts of the United States. In 1910, the Los Angeles Police Department appointed the first regularly rated policewomen, Alice Wells. Before her, matrons were seen as masculine and not very bright. Wells was a college graduate, a social worker, and had deliberately sought the position of a police officer. She soon became a pioneer in the national movement to have police departments hire women as officers. However, that did not really happen, and women were hired by quotas. This means they regularly faced discrimination, silent contempt, sexism at the workplace, and other double standards. Several court cases were fought to reach equality of employment in police agencies. Cases such as Shpritzer v. Lang, Wells v. Civil Service Commission, and the Joanne Rossi case in Pennsylvania were the landmark ones. The most far-reaching case was the August 1971 class-action suit brought by Veragene Hardy against the City of Oakland Civil Service Board, which demanded a civil service classification for police officers with the Oakland Police Department that would be open to men and women on an equal basis. Today policewomen are involved in all aspects of police work. On Sale Until Midnight Tonight PT! https://store.earthstation1.com/crime-and-fire-prevention-films-dvd.html

Shana Tova! And a Happy Jewish New Year to all! ========= September 11-13, 2026: Rosh Hashanah, literally meaning the "head the year", the Jewish New Year, begins at sundown September 11, 2026, lasts all day on September 12, 2026 and ends at sundown on September 13, 2026. The biblical name for this holiday is Yom Teruah, literally "day of shouting or blasting". It is the first of the Jewish High Holy Days (Yamim Nora'im. "Days of Awe") specified by Leviticus 23:23-32 that occur in the early autumn of the Northern Hemisphere. Rosh Hashanah is a two-day celebration that begins on the first day of Tishrei, which is the seventh month of the ecclesiastical year. In contrast to the ecclesiastical year, where the first month Nisan, the Passover month, marks Israel's exodus from Egypt, Rosh Hashanah marks the beginning of the civil year, according to the teachings of Judaism, and is the traditional anniversary of the creation of Adam and Eve, the first man and woman according to the Hebrew Bible, and the inauguration of humanity's role in God's world. According to one secular opinion, the holiday owes its timing to the beginning of the economic year in Southwest Asia and Northeast Africa, marking the start of the agricultural cycle. Rosh Hashanah customs include sounding the shofar (a cleaned-out ram's horn), as prescribed in the Torah, following the prescription of the Hebrew Bible to "raise a noise" on Yom Teruah. Its rabbinical customs include attending synagogue services and reciting special liturgy about teshuva, as well as enjoying festive meals. Eating symbolic foods is now a tradition, such as apples dipped in honey, hoping to evoke a sweet new year. #RoshHashanah #JewishNewYear #TomTeuah #YamimNoraim #ShanaTova On Sale Until Midnight Tonight PT! https://store.earthstation1.com/teinjearkofc.html

September 12, 1974: The Aftermath Of World War II: The Cold War: The Cold War (1962-1979): The Cold War Era Of Stagnation (1964-1982): Ethiopia: The History Of Ethiopia: The Ethiopian Revolution (January 12 - September 12, 1974) (Amharic: Ye'itiyop'iya Abiyoti): The 1974 Ethiopian Coup D'Etat: -- The Ethiopian Revolution ends with The 1974 Ethiopian Coup D'Etat that deposed Haile Selassie, Emperor of Ethiopia, 'Messiah' of the Rastafari movement, ending a reign of 58 years as well as putting an end to the three-millenia-long Solomonic Dynasty, also known as the House of Solomon, who traced their lineage to Emperor Menelik I, the first emperor of Ethiopia (then colony of the Sabaean Kingdom of South Arabia ) in the 10th century BC. The coup was launched by The Derg (also spelled Dergue; "committee" or "council"; Oromo: Dergii), officially The Provisional Military Government Of Socialist Ethiopia (PMAC), the military junta that would go on to rule Ethiopia, then including present-day Eritrea, from 1974 to 1987. The Derg abolished the monarchy and embraced communism as an ideology, establishing Ethiopia as a Marxist-Leninist one-party state with itself as the vanguard party in a provisional government. The Derg was established in June 1974 as The Coordinating Committee Of The Armed Forces, Police And Territorial Army, by low-ranking officers of the Ethiopian Army and police led by Chairman Aman Andom. The Derg was formally renamed the Provisional Military Administrative Council and in September 1974 overthrew the government of the Ethiopian Empire and Emperor Haile Selassie during mass protests. The abolition of feudalism, increased literacy, nationalization, and sweeping land reform including the resettlement and villagization from the Ethiopian Highlands became priorities. Mengistu Haile Mariam became Chairman in 1977, launching the Red Terror political repression campaign (Qey Shibir) to eliminate political opponents, with tens of thousands imprisoned and executed without trial. By the mid-1980s, Ethiopia was ravaged by various issues such as droughts, economic decline and the 1983-1985 famine; the Derg itself estimated more than a million deaths from famine during its time in power. This was followed by increasing reliance on foreign aid and a gradual resurgence of conflicts, particularly the Eritrean War of Independence, and the Ethiopian Civil War between it and various ethnic militias in the periphery. In 1987, Mengistu abolished the Derg and formed the People's Democratic Republic of Ethiopia led by the Workers' Party of Ethiopia, with a new government containing civilians but still dominated by surviving members of the Derg. September 12, 490 BC: Greece: Ancient Greece: Ancient Greek Wars: The Greco-Persian Wars (The Persian Wars): The First Persian Invasion Of Greece: The Battle Of Marathon: -- On the generally accepted date for the battle, the citizen soldiers of Athens, and their Plataea allies, all led by Athenian general Miltiades The Younger, decisively defeat the much larger invading Persian Achaemenid Empire forces of Darius the Great's First Persian Empire under the command of Median admiral Datis and Darius the Great's nephew General Artaphernes. The defeat at Marathon marked the end of the first Persian invasion of Greece, the first attempt by Persia, under Persian King Of Kings Darius I, to subjugate Greece, and the Persian force retreated to Asia, marking a turning point in the Greco-Persian Wars. Darius then began raising a huge new army with which he meant to completely subjugate Greece; however, in 486 BC, his Egyptian subjects revolted, indefinitely postponing any Greek expedition. After Darius died, his son Xerxes I restarted the preparations for a second invasion of Greece, which finally began in 480 BC. The Athenians and their allies chose the location for the battle, with marshes and mountainous terrain, that prevented the Persian cavalry from joining the Persian infantry. Miltiades, the Athenian general, ordered a general attack against the Persian forces, composed primarily of missile troops. He reinforced his flanks, luring the Persians' best fighters into his centre. The inward wheeling flanks enveloped the Persians, routing them. The Persian army broke in panic towards their ships, and large numbers were slaughtered. The first Persian invasion was a response to Athenian involvement in the Ionian Revolt, when Athens and Eretria sent a force to support the cities of Ionia in their attempt to overthrow Persian rule. The Athenians and Eretrians had succeeded in capturing and burning Sardis, but they were then forced to retreat with heavy losses. In response to this raid, Darius swore to burn down Athens and Eretria. According to the ancient Greek historian Herodotus, Darius had his bow brought to him and then shot an arrow "upwards towards heaven", saying as he did so: "Zeus, that it may be granted me to take vengeance upon the Athenians!" Herodotus further writes that Darius charged one of his servants to say "Master, remember the Athenians" three times before dinner each day. At the time of the battle, Sparta and Athens were the two largest city-states in Greece. Once the Ionian revolt was finally crushed by the Persian victory at the Battle of Lade in 494 BC, Darius began plans to subjugate Greece. In 490 BC, he sent a naval task force under Datis and Artaphernes across the Aegean, to subjugate the Cyclades, and then to make punitive attacks on Athens and Eretria. Reaching Euboea in mid-summer after a successful campaign in the Aegean, the Persians proceeded to besiege and capture Eretria. The Persian force then sailed for Attica, landing in the bay near the town of Marathon. The Athenians, joined by a small force from Plataea, marched to Marathon, and succeeded in blocking the two exits from the plain of Marathon. The Athenians also sent a message to the Spartans asking for support. When the messenger arrived in Sparta, the Spartans were involved in a religious festival and gave this as a reason for not coming to help the Athenians. The Battle Of Marathon was a watershed in the Greco-Persian wars, showing the Greeks that the Persians could be beaten; the eventual Greek triumph in these wars can be seen to have begun at Marathon. The battle also showed the Greeks that they were able to win battles without the Spartans, as they had heavily relied on Sparta previously. This victory was largely due to the Athenians, and Marathon raised Greek esteem of them. The following two hundred years saw the rise of the Classical Greek civilization, which has been enduringly influential in western society and so the Battle Of Marathon is often seen as a pivotal moment in Mediterranean and European history. September 12, 1609: The Colonial History Of The United States: Dutch Colonization Of The Americas: New Netherland (Dutch: Nieuw Nederland, Latin: Novum Belgium): The History Of New York City: The Expeditions Of Henry Hudson: The Expedition Of 1609: The Voyage Of The Halve Maen (Dutch: "Half Moon"): Henry Hudson's Discovery Of The Island Of Manhattan: -- Henry Hudson, after having arrived the day before at Manhattan Island and first met the indigenous Munsee Lenape Native Americans living there, begins his exploration aboard his yacht the Halve Maen (Half Moon) up the river that would later bear his name, the Hudson River, until he arrives at the site of present-day Albany. He was not the first documented European to have visited the area. In 1524, Florentine explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano, sailing in service of King Francis I of France, became the first European to visit what would become New York City. He entered the tidal strait now known as The Narrows and named the land around Upper New York Harbor New Angouleme, in reference to the family name of King Francis I that was derived from Angouleme in France; he sailed far enough into the harbor to sight the Hudson River, which he referred to in his report to the French king as a "very big river"; and he named the Bay of Santa Margarita - what is now Upper New York Bay - after Marguerite de Navarre, the elder sister of the king. However, it was not until the voyage of Henry Hudson, an Englishman who worked for the Dutch East India Company, that the area was mapped when Hudson came across Manhattan Island, met the native people living there, and travelled up the Hudson River. On the soil retaining wall of G. Thomas DiDomenico 16th Street Park in Bayonne, New Jersey facing Newark Bay, there is a mural which depicts the Halve Maen due to Bayonne's location across the Hudson River from Battery Park, at the southern tip of Manhattan near the mouth of the river, by which Henry Hudson sailed. #HenryHudson #HalveMaen #HudsonRiver #Manhattan #IslandOfManhattan #Munsee #Lenape #NativeAmericans #MP4 #VideoDownload #DVD On Sale Until Midnight Tonight PT! https://store.earthstation1.com/new-york-city-history-videos-3-dvd-se3.html

The German Workers' Party (Deutsche Arbeiterpartei) was founded in Munich on January 5, 1919 by Anton Drexler, a German far-right political leader of the 1920s and member of the Thule Society, a German occultist and volkisch group founded in Munich right after World War I, named after a mythical northern country in Greek legend . The society is notable chiefly as the organization that sponsored the German Workers' Party. The party's membership emerged from the German nationalist, racist and populist Freikorps paramilitary culture, which fought against the communist uprisings in post-World War I Germany. The party was created as a means to draw workers away from communism and into volkisch nationalism. Initially, Nazi political strategy focused on anti-big business, anti-bourgeois and anti-capitalist rhetoric, although such aspects were later downplayed in order to gain the support of industrial entities and in the 1930s the party's focus shifted to anti-Semitic and anti-Marxist themes. On September 12, 1919, Adolf Hitler became member No. 7, though he was simultaneously a spy employed to observe and report on the group's activities by the Germany army. On February 24, 1920, the Nazi Party was founded by Drexler, just as he had founded its precursor, the German Workers' Party. Hitler reorganized it and renamed it the National Socialist German Workers' Party (Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei, abbreviated NSDAP), commonly referred to in English as the Nazi Party. September 12, 1933: The Interwar Period (The Interbellum, Between The Wars): Nuclear Physics: Nuclear Fission: Nuclear Chain Reactions: Great Inventions: The Atomic Pile (The Nuclear Reactor): -- Leo Szilard, standing transfixed in a moment of revelation while waiting for a red light to change on Southampton Row in Bloomsbury, London, conceives the idea of the nuclear chain reaction. As a result, he patented the idea of a nuclear reactor with Enrico Fermi. Nuclear chain reaction occurs when one single nuclear reaction causes an average of one or more subsequent nuclear reactions, thus leading to the possibility of a self-propagating series of these reactions. The specific nuclear reaction may be the fission of heavy isotopes (e.g., uranium-235, 235U). The nuclear chain reaction releases several million times more energy per reaction than any chemical reaction. Leo Szilard, Hungarian-American physicist, engineer and academic (1898 - 1964) went on to write the letter for Albert Einstein's signature that resulted in the Manhattan Project that built the atomic bomb, and thereafter worked for the Manhattan Project's Metallurgical Laboratory on aspects of nuclear reactor design. The Battle Of Edson's Ridge was the second of three separate major Japanese ground offensives during the Guadalcanal Campaign. In the battle, U.S. Marines, under the overall command of U.S. Major General Alexander Vandegrift, repulsed an attack by the Japanese 35th Infantry Brigade, under the command of Japanese Major General Kiyotake Kawaguchi. The Marines were defending the Lunga perimeter that guarded Henderson Field on Guadalcanal, which was captured from the Japanese by the Allies in landings on Guadalcanal on 7 August 1942. Kawaguchi's unit was sent to Guadalcanal in response to the Allied landings with the mission of recapturing the airfield and driving the Allied forces from the island. Underestimating the strength of Allied forces on Guadalcanal-about 12,000-Kawaguchi's 6,000 soldiers conducted several nighttime frontal assaults on the U.S. defenses. The main Japanese assault occurred around Lunga ridge south of Henderson Field, manned by troops from several U.S. Marine Corps units, primarily troops from the 1st Raider and 1st Parachute Battalions under U.S. Marine Corps Lieutenant Colonel Merritt A. Edson. Although the Marine defenses were almost overrun, Kawaguchi's attack was ultimately defeated, with heavy losses for the Japanese. Because of the key participation by Edson's unit in defending the ridge, the ridge was commonly referred to as "Edson's" ridge in historical accounts of the battle in Western sources. After Edson's Ridge, the Japanese continued to send troops to Guadalcanal for further attempts to retake Henderson Field, affecting Japanese offensive operations in other areas of the South Pacific. Up and down the East Coast, police stations, newspapers, airports, military bases, and the Pentagon were besieged with calls from frantic citizens. One of the strange objects crash-landed on a rural hilltop in Flatwoods, WV. A group of schoolboys saw the object fall to earth. The boys and two adults headed off to look for the object and were confronted by a twelve-foot being that would become known as The Flatwoods Monster, The Braxton County Monster or The Phantom of Flatwoods. The Flatwoods Monster incident and these other events all occurred in just over a 24 hour period. They have never been fully explained, and worse, they have been covered up. September 12, 1962: The History Of Rocketry: The History Of Spaceflight: The Aftermath Of World War II: The Cold War: The Space Age: The Space Race: Space Programs Of The United States: Human Spaceflight Programs: Project Apollo: John F. Kennedy's Address At Rice University On The Nation's Space Effort (The We Choose To Go To The Moon Speech): -- On his ninth wedding anniversary, President John F. Kennedy delivers one of his greatest speeches at Rice University's Rice Stadium in Houston, Texas, reaffirming that the U.S. will put a man on the moon by the end of the decade: "We set sail on this new sea because there is new knowledge to be gained, and new rights to be won, and they must be won and used for the progress of all people. For space science, like nuclear science and all technology, has no conscience of its own. Whether it will become a force for good or ill depends on man, and only if the United States occupies a position of pre-eminence can we help decide whether this new ocean will be a sea of peace or a new terrifying theater of war. I do not say that we should or will go unprotected against the hostile misuse of space any more than we go unprotected against the hostile use of land or sea, but I do say that space can be explored and mastered without feeding the fires of war, without repeating the mistakes that man has made in extending his writ around this globe of ours. There is no strife, no prejudice, no national conflict in outer space as yet. Its hazards are hostile to us all. Its conquest deserves the best of all mankind, and its opportunity for peaceful cooperation may never come again. But why, some say, the Moon? Why choose this as our goal? And they may well ask, why climb the highest mountain? Why, 35 years ago, fly the Atlantic? Why does Rice play Texas? We choose to go to the Moon! We choose to go to the Moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard; because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one we intend to win, and the others, too." September 12, 1977: #DOTD: #RIP: Steve Biko, South African black civil rights leader and anti-apartheid activist (b. December 18, 1946) #dies while in police detention following his arrest in August 1977 from injuries sustained during his August 18 arrest at a police roadblock under the Terrorism Act No. 83 of 1967 in King William' Town, South Africa for bringing attention to South Africa's apartheid policies. He is buried at King William's Town Cemetery in King William's Town, Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality, Eastern Cape, South Africa. Over 20,000 people attended his funeral. Biko's fame spread posthumously; he became the subject of numerous songs and works of art, while a 1978 biography by his friend Donald Woods formed the basis for the 1987 film Cry Freedom. During Biko's life, the government alleged that he hated whites, various anti-apartheid activists accused him of sexism, and African racial nationalists criticised his united front with Coloureds and Indians. Nonetheless, Biko became one of the earliest icons of the movement against apartheid, and is regarded as a political martyr and the "Father of Black Consciousness". His political legacy remains a matter of contention. Steve Biko was born Bantu Stephen Biko at his grandmother's house in Tarkastad, Eastern Cape, South Africa. Ideologically an African nationalist and African socialist, was at the forefront of a grassroots anti-apartheid campaign known as the Black Consciousness Movement during the late 1960s and 1970s. His ideas were articulated in a series of articles published under the pseudonym Frank Talk. Raised in a poor Xhosa family, Biko grew up in Ginsberg township in the Eastern Cape. In 1966, he began studying medicine at the University of Natal, where he joined the National Union Of South African Students (NUSAS). Strongly opposed to the apartheid system of racial segregation and white-minority rule in South Africa, Biko was frustrated that NUSAS and other anti-apartheid groups were dominated by white liberals, rather than by the blacks who were most affected by apartheid. He believed that even when well-intentioned, white liberals failed to comprehend the black experience and often acted in a paternalistic manner. He developed the view that to avoid white domination, black people had to organise independently, and to this end he became a leading figure in the creation of the South African Students' Organisation (SASO) in 1968. Membership was open only to "blacks", a term that Biko used in reference not just to Bantu-speaking Africans but also to Coloureds and Indians. He was careful to keep his movement independent of white liberals, but opposed anti-white racism and had various white friends and lovers. The white-minority National Party government were initially supportive, seeing SASO's creation as a victory for apartheid's ethos of racial separatism. Influenced by Frantz Fanon and the African American Black Power movement, Biko and his compatriots developed Black Consciousness as SASO's official ideology. The movement campaigned for an end to apartheid and the transition of South Africa toward universal suffrage and a socialist economy. It organised Black Community Programmes (BCPs) and focused on the psychological empowerment of black people. Biko believed that black people needed to rid themselves of any sense of racial inferiority, an idea he expressed by popularizing the slogan "black is beautiful". In 1972, he was involved in founding the Black People's Convention (BPC) to promote Black Consciousness ideas among the wider population. The government came to see Biko as a subversive threat and placed him under a banning order in 1973, severely restricting his activities. He remained politically active, helping organise BCPs such as a healthcare centre and a creche (day care center) in the Ginsberg area. During his ban he received repeated anonymous threats, and was detained by state security services on several occasions. Over 600 parietal wall paintings (rock art, also called cave art or parietal art) cover the interior walls and ceilings of the cave. The paintings represent primarily large animals, typical local contemporary fauna that correspond with the fossil record of the Upper Paleolithic age (the Late Stone Age, between 50,000 and 12,000 years ago) in the area. They are the combined effort of many generations and, with continued debate, the age of the paintings is now usually estimated at around 17,000 years (early Magdalenian). Lascaux was inducted into the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list in 1979, as an element of the Prehistoric Sites and Decorated Caves of the Vezere Valley. September 12, 1913: #BOTD: #HBD! Jesse Owens, originally known as J.C., African American track and field athlete and four-time Olympic gold medalist in the 1936 Games (d. March 31, 1980) is #born James Cleveland Owens in Oakville, Alabama to sharecroppers Cleveland Owens and Mary Emma Fitzgerald. Jesse Owens specialized in the sprints and the long jump and was recognized in his lifetime as "perhaps the greatest and most famous athlete in track and field history". He set three world records and tied another, all in less than an hour at the 1935 Big Ten track meet in Ann Arbor, Michigan-a feat that has never been equaled and has been called "the greatest 45 minutes ever in sport". He achieved international fame at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, Germany by winning four gold medals: 100 meters, 200 meters, long jump, and 4 _ 100 meter relay. He was the most successful athlete at the Games and, as a black man, was credited with "single-handedly crushing Hitler's myth of Aryan supremacy", although he "wasn't invited to the White House to shake hands with the President, either". The Jesse Owens Award is USA Track and Field's highest accolade for the year's best track and field athlete. Owens was ranked by ESPN as the sixth greatest North American athlete of the 20th century and the highest-ranked in his sport. In 1999, he was on the six-man short-list for the BBC's Sports Personality of the Century. Jesse Owens died of an extremely aggressive and drug-resistant type of lung cancer, having been a pack-a-day cigarette smoker for 35 years, starting at age 32, for which he was hospitalized on and off beginning in December 1979 at age 66 in Tucson, Arizona, with his wife and other family members at his bedside. He is buried next to the Lake Of Memories at Oak Woods Cemetery in Chicago, near where his children and extended family still lived. The grave is inscribed "Jesse Owens. Olympic Champion. 1936. Athlete and humanitarian. A master of the spirit as well as the mechanics of sports. A winner who knew that winning was not everything. He showed extraordinary love for his family and friends. His achievements have shown us all the promise of America. His faith in America inspired countless others to do their best for themselves and their country. September 12, 1913 - March 31, 1980." Although Jimmy Carter had ignored Owens's request to cancel the Olympic boycott, the president issued a tribute to Owens after he died: "Perhaps no athlete better symbolized the human struggle against tyranny, poverty and racial bigotry." September 12, 1880: #BOTD: H. L. Mencken, known as "The Sage Of Baltimore", American journalist, satirist, cultural critic and scholar of American English (d. January 29, 1956) is #born Henry Louis Mencken in Baltimore, Maryland, the son of Anna Margaret (Abhau) and August Mencken Sr., a cigar factory owner, a family of German ancestry who all spoke German in his childhood household. H. L. Mencken commented widely on the social scene, literature, music, prominent politicians and contemporary movements. His satirical reporting on the Scopes trial, which he dubbed the "Monkey Trial", also gained him attention. The term "Menckenian" has entered multiple dictionaries to describe anything of or pertaining to Mencken, including his combative rhetorical and prose style. As a scholar, Mencken is known for The American Language, a multi-volume study of how the English language is spoken in the United States. As an admirer of the German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, he was an outspoken opponent of organized religion, theism, and representative democracy, the last of which he viewed as a system in which inferior men dominated their superiors. Mencken was a supporter of scientific progress and was critical of osteopathy and chiropractic. He was also an open critic of economics. Mencken opposed the American entry into World War I and World War II. Some of the opinions in his private diary entries have been described by some researchers as racist and anti-Semitic, although this characterization has been disputed. Larry S. Gibson argued that Mencken's views on race changed significantly between his early and later writings, and that it was more accurate to describe Mencken as elitist rather than racist. He seemed to show a genuine enthusiasm for militarism but never in its American form. "War is a good thing," he wrote, "because it is honest; it admits the central fact of human nature.... A nation too long at peace becomes a sort of gigantic old maid." His longtime home in the Union Square neighborhood of West Baltimore was turned into a city museum, the H. L. Mencken House. His papers were distributed among various city and university libraries, with the largest collection held in the Mencken Room at the central branch of Baltimore's Enoch Pratt Free Library. H. L. Mencken died in his sleep in Baltimore, Maryland, aged 75. He is interred in Baltimore's Loudon Park Cemetery. Though it does not appear on his tombstone, Mencken, during his Smart Set days, wrote a joking epitaph for himself: "If, after I depart this vale, you ever remember me and have thought to please my ghost, forgive some sinner and wink your eye at some homely girl." A very small, short, and private service was held, in accordance with Mencken's wishes. On Sale Until Midnight Tonight PT! https://store.earthstation1.com/clarence-darrow-dvd-tv-documentaries.html

September 12-13, 1847: The Mexican-American War (The Mexican War): The Battle For Mexico City: The Battle Of Chapultepec: -- An assault by invading U.S. Army and Marine forces on a small contingent of Mexican forces holding the strategically located Chapultepec Castle just outside Mexico City begins The Battle Of Chapultepec. The building, sitting atop a 200-foot (60 m) hill, was an important position for the defense of the city. For the campaign to take Mexico City, of which the Battle Of Chapultepec is a part, General Winfield Scott's U.S. Army totaled 7,200 men. General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna deployed Mexican forces to several sites to defend the capital, so that just 880 troops, including military cadets of the Military Academy defended the position at Chapultepec against 2,000 U.S. forces. The Mexican forces' loss opened the way to take the center of Mexico City. Although it lasted only about 60-90 minutes, the battle has great importance in the histories of both countries. The next day, September 13, six Mexican teenage military cadets known as the Ninos Heroes (Spanish: Boy Heroes) died defending Chapultepec Castle. According to legend, in an act of bravery, Juan Escutia wrapped the Mexican flag around his body and jumped from the top of the castle in order to keep it from falling into the enemy's hands. The Ninos Heroes are a key part of Mexico's patriotic folklore, commemorated by a national holiday on September 13, Dia de los Ninos Heroes (Day of the Boy Heroes). However, several modern Mexican historians claim that parts of the story are not factual. Chapultepec Castle (Spanish: Castillo de Chapultepec) is located on top of Chapultepec Hill. The name Chapultepec stems from the Nahuatl word chapoltepec which means "at the grasshopper's hill". The castle has such unparalleled views and terraces that historian James F. Elton wrote that they can't "be surpassed in beauty in any part of he world". It is located in the middle of Chapultepec Park in Mexico City at a height of 2,325 meters (7,628 ft) above sea level. The site of the hill was a sacred place for Aztecs, and the buildings atop it have served several purposes during its history, including that of Military Academy, Imperial residence, Presidential home, observatory, and presently, the National Museum of History. It is the only royal castle in the Americas. American troops under General Winfield Scott went on after their victory at Chapultepec to win the Battle For Mexico City. When the Duke of Wellington, victor of Waterloo, learned that Scott had succeeded against alarming odds in capturing Mexico City, he proclaimed Scott "the greatest living general". September 12, 1944: #BOTD: Leonard Peltier, Native American activist, citizen of the Anishinabe and Dakota/Lakota Nations and member of the American Indian Movement (AIM) who was convicted of murdering two Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agents during the June 26, 1975 Shootout At Pine Ridge on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota, sentenced to two consecutive terms of life imprisonment, commuted on the last full day of Joe Biden's presidency to home confinement beginning on February 18, 2025 when he was released, is #born at the Turtle Mountain Indian Reservation of the Turtle Mountain Chippewa near Belcourt, North Dakota. He is of Lakota and Dakota (both Sioux) and Anishinaabe Native American and French descent, and is an enrolled member of the Turtle Mountain Chippewa. He was raised among the Turtle Mountain Chippewa and Fort Totten Sioux Nations of North Dakota. Two FBI agents, Jack R. Coler and Ronald A. Williams, and a member of AIM, the American Indian Movement, Joe Stuntz, were killed in The Shootout At Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. At the time of the shootout, Peltier was an active member of AIM, an Indigenous rights advocacy group that worked to combat the racism and police brutality experienced by Native Americans. In two separate trials, the U.S. prosecuted participants in the firefight for the deaths of the agents. AIM members Robert Robideau and Dino Butler were acquitted after asserting that they had acted in self-defense. Leonard Peltier was extradited from Canada and tried separately because of the delay in getting him to trial. He was convicted on two counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of both FBI agents and sentenced to two consecutive terms of life in prison in a controversial trial. Peltier became eligible for parole in 1993, which was repeatedly denied due to his having murdered law enforcement agents. Peltier ran for president of the United States in 2004, winning the nomination of the Peace and Freedom Party, and receiving 27,607 votes, limited to the ballot in California. He ran for vice president of the United States in 2020 on the Party for Socialism and Liberation ticket with Gloria La Riva as the presidential candidate, as well on tickets for other Left parties and on the ballot of the Peace and Freedom Party. For health reasons, Peltier withdrew from those tickets on August 1, 2020. In his 1999 memoir Prison Writings: My Life Is My Sun Dance, Peltier admitted to participating in the shootout but said he did not kill the FBI agents. Despite this, some witnesses say he confessed, including Darlene Ka-Mook Nichols, who testified against him at trial. Human rights watchdogs, such as Amnesty International, and political figures including Nelson Mandela, Mother Teresa, and the 14th Dalai Lama, campaigned for clemency for Peltier. On January 18, 2017, the Office of the Pardon Attorney announced that President Barack Obama had denied Peltier's application for clemency. On June 10, 2024, when he was 79, Peltier had his first parole hearing since 2009, with a decision on parole being required to come within 21 days. On July 2, 2024, Peltier was denied parole. After Peltier was denied parole, his lawyer Kevin Sharp stated that an interim hearing to discuss parole was set in 2026, while another full hearing was set for 2039. Ahead of the 2024 parole hearing, Sharp described the hearing as "probably" Peltier's "last chance" to make a case for parole. On January 19, 2025, Peltier's sentence was commuted to house arrest by President Joe Biden on his last full day in office. His son said that the Turtle Mountain Band had a home arranged for him on the reservation in Belcourt, North Dakota. On February 18, the date specified by the grant of clemency, Peltier was released and transferred to the Turtle Mountain Indian Reservation in Belcourt, North Dakota. Upon his release, Peltier's younger sister Shelia confirmed to the Minnesota-based newspaper Star Tribune that he was transferred there, where he reunited with his family. #LeonardPeltier #AIM #AmericanIndianMovement #WoundedKneeIncident #PineRidgeIndianReservation #RedPowerMovement #NativeAmericans #NativeAmericanHistory #MP4 #VideoDownload #DVD On Sale Until Midnight Tonight PT! https://store.earthstation1.com/the-wounded-knee-massacre-the-battle-of-wounded-knee-dvd-mp4-usb-driv4.html

September 12, 1943: The European Civil War: World War II: The Second European War (The European Theater Of World War II): The Eastern Front Of World War II: The Great Patriotic War (The German-Soviet War): Aviation: Military Aviation: Air Warfare Of World War II: -- Gunther Rall (Anglicized: Guenther Rall), highly decorated German military aviator, fighter ace, officer and general and pilot, third most successful fighter pilot in aviation history whose military career spanned nearly forty years (March 10, 1918 - October 4, 2009), is awarded the Knight's Cross Of The Iron Cross With Oak Leaves And Swords, the second highest military award in the Third Reich at the time of the presentation. His fighter successes were exceeded only by Gerhard Barkhorn ("Gerd"), who ranks second, and Erich Hartmann ("The Black Devil", "Bubi"), who ranks first. During World War II Rall was credited with the destruction of 275 enemy aircraft in 621 combat missions. He was shot down five times and wounded on three occasions. Rall claimed all of his victories in a Messerschmitt Bf 109, though he also flew the Focke-Wulf Fw 190 operationally. All but three of his claims were against Soviet opposition. Gunther Rall was born in Gaggenau, the German Empire, and grew up in the Weimar Republic. In 1933 the Nazi Party seized power and Rall, deciding upon a military career, joined the Wehrmacht (Nazi German Armed Forces) in 1936 to train as an infantry soldier. Rall transferred to the Luftwaffe soon after and he qualified as a fighter pilot in 1938. In September 1939 World War II began with the German Invasion Of Poland. Rall was assigned to Jagdgeschwader 52 (JG 52-Fighter Wing 52) and flew combat patrols in the Phoney War period on the Western Front. Rall flew combat missions in the Battle Of France and Battle Of Britain, claiming one enemy aircraft destroyed in May 1940. Rall's wing sustained heavy casualties, and as a result the then-22 year old was appointed to Staffelkapitan (Squadron Leader). He then served in the Balkans Campaign in April and May 1941 without success. In June 1941, JG 52 moved to the Eastern Front, where it remained from Operation Barbarossa until the end of the war. Rall claimed his first successes in the air defence of Romania. In November 1941, he was shot down, wounded and invalidated from flying for a year. At this time Rall had claimed 36 aerial victories. His achievements earned him the German Cross in Gold in December 1941. Rall returned in August 1942 and was awarded the Knight's Cross on September 3, 1942 for 65 enemy aircraft shot down. By October 22 Rall had claimed 100 and received the Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves. He reached 200 in late August 1943. On September 12, 1943 he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords, the second highest military award in the Third Reich at the time of the presentation. By the end of 1943 Rall had achieved over 250, the second flier to do so after Nowotny did in October 1943. In April 1944 Rall left JG 52 and the Eastern Front. He was given command of II./Jagdgeschwader 11 and served in the Defence of the Reich where he was wounded for a third time. In November 1944 Rall was appointed as an instructor and flew captured Allied fighter aircraft in order to prepare instruction notes on their performance to German fighter pilots. Rall ended the war with an unsuccessful stint commanding Jagdgeschwader 300 near Salzburg, Austria, where he surrendered in May 1945. After World War II, Rall joined the West German Air Force in 1956, served as Inspector of the Air Force from 1971 to 1974, and as the German representative to the NATO Military Committee until 1975. After his retirement Rall became a consultant. Among his post-war achievements was the presentation of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, awarded to him for his post-1945 service. Gunther Rall died at his home in Bad Reichenhall after suffering a heart attack two days earlier. September 12, 1938: The Interwar Period (The Interbellum, Between The Wars): The Road To War: The Sudetenland: The Sudeten Crisis: -- Adolf Hitler demands autonomy and self-determination for the Germans of the Sudetenland region of Czechoslovakia. The Sudetenland is the historical German name for the northern, southern, and western areas of former Czechoslovakia which were inhabited primarily by Sudeten Germans. These German speakers had predominated in the border districts of Bohemia, Moravia, and Czech Silesia from the time of the Austrian Empire. The word "Sudetenland" did not come into existence until the early 20th century and did not come to prominence until after the First World War, when the German-dominated Austria-Hungary was dismembered and the Sudeten Germans found themselves living in the new country of Czechoslovakia. The Sudeten Crisis of 1938 was provoked by the Pan-Germanist demands of Germany that the Sudetenland be annexed to Germany, which happened after the later Munich Agreement. When Czechoslovakia was reconstituted after the Second World War, the Sudeten Germans were expelled and the region today is inhabited almost exclusively by Czech speakers. The word Sudetenland is a German compound of Land, meaning "country", and Sudeten, the name of the Sudeten Mountains, which run along the northern Czech border and Lower Silesia (now in Poland). The Sudetenland encompassed areas well beyond those mountains, however. September 12, 1983: The Aftermath Of World War II: The Cold War: The Cold War (1962-1979): The Cold War Era Of Stagnation (1964-1982): The Cold War In Asia: Aviation: The History Of Aviation: The History Of Civil Aviation: Aviation Incidents And Accidents: Korean Air Lines Flight 007 (KE007/KAL007): -- The USSR vetoes a United Nations Security Council Resolution deploring the Soviet destruction of Korean Air Lines Flight 007. On September 1, 1983, Korean Air Lines Flight 007 was shot down by a Russian fighter jet while on route from New York to Seoul, killing all 269 persons on board, including U.S. Congressman Lawrence McDonald of Georgia. The Boeing 747 reportedly strayed 100 miles off course over secret Soviet Russian military installations on the Kamchatka Peninsula and Sakhalin Island. It crashed in the Sea of Japan. Korean Air Lines Flight 007 (also known as KAL007 and KE007) was a scheduled Korean Air Lines flight from New York City to Seoul via Anchorage, Alaska. On 1 September 1983, the South Korean airliner serving the flight was shot down by a Soviet Su-15 interceptor. The Boeing 747 airliner was en route from Anchorage to Seoul, but deviated from its original planned route and flew through Soviet prohibited airspace about the time of a U.S. aerial reconnaissance mission. The Soviet Air Forces treated the unidentified aircraft as an intruding U.S. spy plane, and proceeded to destroy it with air-to-air missiles, after firing warning shots which were likely not seen by the KAL pilots. The Korean airliner eventually crashed in the sea near Moneron Island west of Sakhalin in the Sea of Japan. All 269 passengers and crew aboard were killed, including Lawrence Patton McDonald, cousin of General George S. Patton, a Representative from Georgia in the United States House Of Representatives, and the second president of the John Birch Society, a self-described conservative advocacy group supporting anti-communism and limited government that has been described as a radical right and far-right organization. McDonald's radical right anti-communist credentials gave rise to a number of conspiracy theories regarding the airliner shoot-down; the subject of Korean Air Lines Flight 007 Alternative Theories concerns the various and ongoing controversy and theories put forward regarding the shooting down of plane. Many of these are based on the suppression of evidence such as the flight data recorders, unexplained details such as the role of a USAF RC-135 surveillance aircraft nearby the shoot-down, or merely Cold War disinformation and propaganda. The Soviets found the wreckage under the sea on September 15, and found the flight recorders in October, but this information was kept secret until 1993. The Soviet Union initially denied knowledge of the incident, but later admitted shooting down the aircraft, claiming that it was on a MASINT spy mission. The Politburo of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union said it was a deliberate provocation by the United States to probe the Soviet Union's military preparedness, or even to provoke a war. The White House accused the Soviet Union of obstructing search and rescue operations. The Soviet Armed Forces suppressed evidence sought by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) investigation, such as the flight recorders, which were released eight years later, after the Dissolution Of The Soviet Union. The incident was one of the most tense moments of the Cold War and resulted in an escalation of anti-Soviet sentiment, particularly in the United States. As a result of the incident, the United States altered tracking procedures for aircraft departing from Alaska. The interface of the autopilot used on airliners was redesigned to make it more ergonomic. In addition, the incident was one of the most important events that prompted the Reagan administration to allow worldwide access to the United States Global Positioning System (GPS). September 12, 1852: #BOTD: #HBD! H. H. Asquith, English lawyer and politician, Liberal Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1908 to 1916, the last Liberal leader to lead that party in government without forming a coalition, who had a central role in the design and passage of major liberal legislation and a reduction of the power of the House of Lords, leader of The United Kingdom's war effort in the first half of World War I (d. February 15, 1928) is #born Herbert Henry Asquith in Morley, a market town in The West Riding Of Yorkshire, one of three historic subdivisions of Yorkshire, England. He was the younger son of Joseph Dixon Asquith (1825-1860) and his wife Emily, nee Willans (1828-1888). The couple also had three daughters, of whom only one survived infancy. The Asquiths were an old Yorkshire family, with a long nonconformist tradition. Herbert Henry Asquith, 1st Earl Of Oxford And Asquith, KG (Order Of The Garter), PC (Privy Council), KC (King's Counsel), FRS (Fellowship of the Royal Society) took Great Britain and the British Empire into the First World Warin August 1914. During 1915, his government was vigorously attacked for a shortage of munitions and the failure of the Gallipoli Campaign. He formed a coalition government with other parties but failed to satisfy critics, was forced to resign in December 1916 and never regained power. After attending Balliol College, Oxford, he became a successful barrister. In 1886, he was the Liberal candidate for East Fife, a seat he held for over thirty years. In 1892, he was appointed as Home Secretary in Gladstone's fourth ministry, remaining in the post until the Liberals lost the 1895 election. In the decade of opposition that followed, Asquith became a major figure in the party, and when the Liberals regained power under Sir Henry Campbell-Bannerman in 1905, Asquith was named Chancellor of the Exchequer. In 1908, Asquith succeeded him as prime minister. The Liberals were determined to advance their reform agenda. An impediment to this was the House of Lords, which rejected the People's Budget of 1909. Meanwhile, the South Africa Act 1909 passed. Asquith called an election for January 1910, and the Liberals won, though they were reduced to a minority government. After another general election in December 1910, he gained passage of the Parliament Act 1911, allowing a bill three times passed by the Commons in consecutive sessions to be enacted regardless of the Lords. Asquith was less successful in dealing with Irish Home Rule. Repeated crises led to gun running and violence, verging on civil war. When Britain declared war on Germany in response to the German invasion of Belgium, high-profile domestic conflicts were suspended regarding Ireland and women's suffrage. Asquith was more of a committee chair than a dynamic leader. He oversaw national mobilization, the dispatch of the British Expeditionary Force to the Western Front, the creation of a mass army, and the development of an industrial strategy designed to support the country's war aims. The war became bogged down and the demand rose for better leadership. He was forced to form a coalition with the Conservatives and Labour early in 1915. He was weakened by his own indecision over strategy, conscription, and financing. Lloyd George replaced him as prime minister in December 1916. They became bitter enemies and fought for control of the fast-declining Liberal Party. His role in creating the modern British welfare state (1906-1911) has been celebrated, but his weaknesses as a war leader and as a party leader after 1914 have been highlighted by historians. He remained the only Prime Minister between 1827 and 1979 to serve more than eight consecutive years in a single term. Asquith died in the morning, aged 75, at The Wharf, one of the three buildings (The Wharf, Walton House and Mill House) of a complex of buildings bought and expanded by his wife Margot Asquith in Church Street, Sutton Courtenay, Oxfordshire, England. He was buried, at his own wish, with great simplicity, in the churchyard of All Saints' at Sutton Courtenay, his gravestone recording his name, title, and the dates of his birth and death. A blue plaque records his long residence at 20 Cavendish Square and a memorial tablet was subsequently erected in Westminster Abbey. Viscount Grey, with Haldane Asquith's oldest political friend, wrote, "I have felt (his) death very much: it is true that his work was done but we were very close together for so many years. I saw the beginning of his Parliamentary life; and to witness the close is the end of a long chapter of my own." Asquith's will was proved on June 9, 1928, with his estate amounting to 9345 PS (roughly 599,011 PS in 2021). His great grandaughter is English actress Helena Bonham Carter. September 12, 1921: #BOTD: #HBD! Frank McGee, American television journalist, best known for his work with NBC from the late 1950s into the early 1970 (d. April 17, 1974) is #born in Monroe in Ouachita Parish, Louisiana. He was raised in Norman, Oklahoma. McGee's father was an oil field worker. He joined the Oklahoma National Guard in 1940, and served in the U.S. Army in World War II, then attended the University of California and the University of Oklahoma. He began his broadcast news career at KGFF in Shawnee, Oklahoma, in 1946 then moved to WKY-TV (now KFOR-TV) in Oklahoma City. In 1955, the owners of WKY purchased WSFA-TV in Montgomery, Alabama, and sent McGee there as news director. WSFA was an affiliate of NBC. As the civil rights movement gained national coverage, McGee's work came to the notice of NBC, which offered him a position with the network, based in New York City. He went on to become "one of television's most prominent newsmen". McGee was a floor correspondent for the national conventions of both political parties in 1960, 1964, and 1968, one member of the so-called "Four Horsemen" that included NBC newsmen John Chancellor, Edwin Newman, and Sander Vanocur. In 1960, he moderated the second debate between presidential candidates John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon on October 7 in Washington, D.C. At that time, the debates were considered by the news media to have swung the election in favor of Kennedy among voters who watched them on television. For those who listened on radio, the influence was mixed. McGee had a great talent for descriptive language, often giving viewers a vivid word picture of the day's events. When NBC News colleague Chet Huntley broke the news of the assassination of John F. Kennedy on November 22, 1963, McGee appeared in the studio with Huntley and Bill Ryan. Correspondent Robert MacNeil reported by telephone from Dallas, but the flash studio in New York was not equipped to put telephone calls on the air. This was eventually accomplished, but for the first hour, MacNeil spoke to McGee over the telephone, and McGee then repeated MacNeil's report to the viewing audience. During MacNeil's report that the president had died, his comments were finally heard over the air, but McGee, unaware of the change, repeated them anyway. The veteran journalist remained on duty for 45 hours with little rest, reporting without a script. McGee was also on the air in 1968 when word came of the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy following the California primary, and he calmly anchored the network's breaking news coverage. In the early 1960s, he also served as a news reporter and host (referred to as "communicators") on the NBC Radio weekend show Monitor. He is most noted for his interview on that program with Martin Luther King Jr. and for asking him how he felt about being targeted for assassination. King calmly told McGee he had given serious thought of the possibility. McGee also was a featured anchor during NBC's coverage of the early U.S. crewed space flights. In 1967, McGee lived with members of the 101st Airborne Division in Vietnam for almost a month to report a well-received documentary, Same Mud, Same Blood, about black soldiers in Vietnam. McGee was perhaps best known in the middle and late 1960s for hosting The Frank McGee Report, seen early Saturday and Sunday evenings. The half-hour program generally gave more attention to one or more topics than a regular newscast, sometimes employing a full documentary format. In 1969, NBC began a traditional Saturday evening newscast, and in 1970, a Sunday version, both of which replaced The Report. McGee, however, often anchored those weekend newscasts. For several months in 1970, McGee also anchored the New York City WNBC-TV local 6 p.m. newscast. In 1970, after Huntley's retirement ended the Huntley-Brinkley Report, McGee became one of a platoon of three anchors on the newly renamed NBC Nightly News, along with Chancellor and David Brinkley. When the network settled on Chancellor as permanent anchor the next year, McGee moved to The Today Show in 1971, replacing Hugh Downs, who had hosted the program since 1962. McGee moved Today into a more serious news presentation, insisting on opening and closing the show by himself while sharing other duties with co-host Barbara Walters. He also insisted that he, and not Walters, ask guests the first three questions if both of them were doing an interview, according to Walters. McGee last appeared on Today on April 11, 1974, six days before his death at the age of 52 from complications from multiple myeloma, a type of bone cancer. Following that last show, he checked himself into Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center in New York; his immune system was weakened by chemotherapy and radiation treatment, and he died of an overwhelming pneumonia. He was succeeded by another Oklahoma native, Jim Hartz, who co-hosted the show with Walters until 1976, when Tom Brokaw and Jane Pauley arrived. McGee and his wife Sue (1921-2002) are buried at Saint Paul's Episcopal Churchyard in Woodville, Virginia. September 12, 1940: #BOTD: #HBD! Stephen Solarz, American academic and politician, member of the U.S. House of Representatives from New York's 13th District, first American public official to visit North Korea since the end of the Korean War, and the first to meet with Kim Il-Sung, dubbed "Lafayette of the Philippines" by Corazon Aquino, one of the few westerners to receive a standing ovation in the Indian Parliament (d. November 29, 2010) is #born Stephen Joshua Solarz to Jewish parents in Manhattan, New York City, where he attended public schools and graduated from Midwood High School in Brooklyn, NY. in 1958. Stephen Joshua Solarz later received a B.A. from Brandeis University in 1962, and an M.A. in public law and government from Columbia University in 1967. Solarz was keen in international relations of the United States and was both an outspoken critic of President Ronald Reagan's deployment of Marines to Lebanon in 1982 and a cosponsor of the Authorization For Use Of Military Force Against Iraq Resolution of 1991 during the Presidency of George H. W. Bush. He served as a United States Representative from New York until his political career ended in the wake of the House banking scandal, involving members being allowed to overdraw their House checking accounts without risk of being penalized by the House bank. Having written 743 overdrafts, he was not charged, but his wife Nina Koldin pled guilty to two criminal charges of writing bad checks on their joint account. In 1966, Solarz was the campaign manager for an anti-war campaign, for a U.S. House seat. He used that experience to make a successful run for the State Assembly two years later. Solarz taught political science at Brooklyn College from 1967-1968. He was a member of the New York State Assembly from 1969 to 1974, sitting in the 178th, 179th and 180th New York State Legislatures. In the 1973 Democratic primary, Solarz ran against Sebastian Leone for Brooklyn borough president, and lost. That was not unexpected; Solarz had run mostly for improved name recognition and to make political and fund-raising contacts. In 1974, he was a delegate to the Democratic National Mid-term Convention. In September 1974, Solarz defeated incumbent Democrat Bertram L. Podell in the Democratic primary for the New York 13th District. At the time, Podell was under federal indictment; he was later convicted. In November 1974, Solarz was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, to the 94th Congress, beginning January 3, 1975. He was re-elected eight more times, serving until January 3, 1993. On July 18, 1980, Solarz became the first American public official to visit North Korea since the end of the Korean War, and the first to meet with Kim Il-Sung. In the 1980s, he chaired the Asian and Pacific Affairs Subcommittee of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, an area of growing interest to the American people in that decade. He is remembered for his leadership on the Philippines. He left Manila just as Benigno S. Aquino Jr. was coming home to challenge President Ferdinand E. Marcos. Following Aquino's assassination, Solarz returned to Manila for the funeral and proceeded to push the Reagan administration to distance itself from the Marcos government. Shortly after Marcos left for exile in Hawaii, Solarz was visiting at one of the opulent palaces and publicized Imelda's massive shoe collection. He worked closely with Aquino's widow, Corazon, who became president, and who dubbed him the "Lafayette of the Philippines." Solarz had strong ties to India and was held in high esteem by Indian leaders across the political spectrum. His motivations were partly driven by the presence of prosperous Indian Americans in his district. He visited India dozens of times, during and after his term in Congress, and once received a standing ovation on the floor of the Indian Parliament, as has happened to only a few Westerners, among them Bill Clinton and John F. Kennedy. He received bipartisan credit for having helped set the stage for substantial improvements in U.S.-India relations since the 1990s. In 1982 and 1986, Solarz met with Iraqi President Saddam Hussein. In 1998 he led a group of neoconservatives urging President Bill Clinton to overthrow him. The round of redistricting following the 1990 Census divided his district into six pieces, reflecting his cold relations with many state lawmakers in Albany. After conducting extensive polling, Solarz decided that rather than challenge Democratic incumbent Ted Weiss or Republican incumbent S. William Green, he would seek election to the open seat in the heavily Hispanic 12th Congressional District. Solarz entered the race damaged by the House banking scandal, having written 743 overdrafts; he was not charged, but his wife pled guilty to two criminal charges of writing bad checks on their joint account. Solarz was defeated in the Democratic primary by Nydia Velazquez. Solarz was appointed by President Bill Clinton as chairman of the U.S. government-funded Central Asian-American Enterprise Fund to bring private sector development to central Asia and served from 1993 to 1998. In 1994, Solarz was a leading candidate to be nominated as the United States Ambassador to India, however Solarz was forced to withdraw from consideration after scrutiny of his efforts to obtain a visa for a Hong Kong businessman with a criminal record. Solarz's poor relations with members of the foreign service and the New York state political establishment were also identified as reasons for the failure of his nomination. The post instead went to Frank G. Wisner. Since 1994, Solarz had remained active with the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs. He was also a member of the Intellibridge Expert Network and of the executive committee of the International Crisis Group. Solarz was also co-chairman of the American Committee for Peace in the Caucasus, along with Zbigniew Brzezinski. Solarz served on the Board of Directors of the National Endowment for Democracy from 1992 to 2001, and was awarded its Democracy Service Medal on retirement. He was also a founding member of the Board of Directors of the Hollings Center for International Dialogue, helping to establish the organization's presence in Turkey, and served until he died of esophageal cancer in Washington, D.C. at the age of 70. He is buried at the Congressional Cemetery in Washington, D.C.. September 12, 1888: #BOTD: Maurice Chevalier, French actor, singer, dancer and entertainer, best known for his signature songs, including "Livin' In The Sunlight", "Valentine", "Louise", "Mimi", and "Thank Heaven for Little Girls"; for his films, including The Love Parade, The Big Pond, The Smiling Lieutenant, One Hour with You and Love Me Tonight ; and for his trademark attire of a tuxedo and a boater hat (also known as a straw boater, basher, skimmer, English Panama, cady, katie, canotier, somer, sennit hat, or in Japan, can-can hat, suruken) (d. January 1, 1972) is #born Maurice Auguste Chevalier in Paris, France to Victor Charles Chevalier (1854-), a French house painter, and Josephine (nee Van Den Bossche, 1852-1929) a lace-maker of Belgian (Flemish) descent. He made his name as a star of musical comedy, appearing in public as a singer and dancer at an early age before working in menial jobs as a teenager. In 1909, he became the partner of the biggest female star in France at the time, Frehel. Although their relationship was brief, she secured him his first major engagement, as a mimic and a singer in l'Alcazar in Marseille, for which he received critical acclaim by French theatre critics. In 1917, he discovered jazz and ragtime and went to London, where he found new success at the Palace Theatre. After this, he toured the United States, where he met the American composers George Gershwin and Irving Berlin and brought the operetta Dede to Broadway in 1922. He developed an interest in acting and had success in Dede. When talkies arrived, he went to Hollywood in 1928, where he played his first American role in Innocents of Paris. In 1930, he was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor for his roles in The Love Parade (1929) and The Big Pond (1930), which secured his first big American hits, "You Brought a New Kind of Love to Me" and "Livin' in the Sunlight, Lovin' in the Moonlight". In 1957, he appeared in Love in the Afternoon, which was his first Hollywood film in more than 20 years. In 1958, he starred with Leslie Caron and Louis Jourdan in Gigi. In the early 1960s, he made eight films, including Can-Can in 1960 and Fanny the following year. In 1970, he made his final contribution to the film industry where he sang the title song of the Disney film The Aristocats. Chevalier suffered from bouts of depression throughout his adult life. On March 7, 1971, he attempted suicide by overdosing on barbiturates. Rushed to the hospital, Chevalier was saved but suffered liver and kidney damage as a result of the drug. In the following months, he suffered memory lapses, chronic tiredness, and spent much of his time alone. On December 12, he fell ill and was taken to Paris's Necker Hospital and placed on dialysis. By December 30, doctors announced his kidneys were no longer responding to dialysis. Too frail for a transplant, he underwent surgery as a last-ditch effort to save his life. It was unsuccessful; Chevalier died from a cardiac arrest in Paris following kidney surgery on New Year's Day 1972, aged 83. He is interred in the cemetery of Marnes-la-Coquette in Hauts-de-Seine, outside Paris, France with his mother, "La Louque". Chevalier has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 1651 Vine Street. Author Michael Freedland later claimed in his 1981 biography of Chevalier that the actor Felix Paquet, who became close to Chevalier during the 1960s, cut off contact with all of his friends and family in hopes of securing access to his fortune. Freedland alleges that Paquet, eighteen years Chevalier's junior, intercepted mail and withheld information about Maurice's health in the months before his death. September 12, 1901: #BOTD: #HBD! Ben Blue, Canadian-American vaudeville actor and comedian (d. March 7, 1975) is #born Benjamin Bernstein in Montreal, Quebec into the Jewish family of David Asher Bernstein and Sadie Goldberg. Blue emigrated to Baltimore, Maryland at the age of nine, where he won a contest for the best impersonation of Charlie Chaplin. At the age of fifteen he was in a touring company and later became a stage manager and assistant general manager. He became a dance instructor and nightclub proprietor. In the 1920s Blue joined a popular orchestra, Jack White and His Montrealers. The entire band emphasized comedy, and would continually interact with the joke-cracking maestro. Blue, the drummer, would sometimes deliver corny jokes while wearing a ridiculously false beard. The band emigrated to the United States, and appeared in two early sound musicals - the Vitaphone short subject Jack White and His Montrealers and Universal's feature-length 2-strip Technicolor revue King of Jazz (1930). In 1930, Blue toured with the "Earl Carroll Vanities". Blue left the band to establish himself as a solo comedian, portraying a bald-headed dumb-bell with a goofy expression. Producer Hal Roach featured him in his "Taxi Boys" comedy shorts, but Blue's dopey character was an acquired taste and he was soon replaced by other comedians. Later in the 1930s he worked at Paramount Pictures, notably in The Big Broadcast of 1938, and later at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, in films such as Easy to Wed. He was divorced by his first wife in 1937. He was ordered to pay 600 USD (approximately 11K USD in 2020) monthly alimony. The judge told him: "You are no exception to the rule that theatrical careers do not last long, and yours already has been a long one." In 1950, he had his own short-lived TV series, The Ben Blue Show, and was also a regular on The Frank Sinatra Show. Blue was a guest star on the summer replacement television show Saturday Night Revue in 1954. In 1951, Blue began concentrating on managing and appearing in nightclubs in Hollywood, California and San Francisco. He once appeared in a Reno, Nevada nightclub called the Dollhouse where he lost 25K USD to its owner, Bill Welch. Blue and Maxie Rosenbloom owned and performed in Hollywood's top nightclub in the 1940s called "Slapsie Maxie's." Again, in the 1960s he opened a nightclub in Santa Monica, California, called "Ben Blue's". It quickly became the "in" place and night after night was packed with top celebrities. Ben closed the club three years later because of health problems. Blue made the cover of TV Guide's June 11, 1954 Special Issue along with Alan Young, headlining an edition featuring that season's summer replacement shows. He also made appearances in TV shows such as The Jack Benny Program and The Milton Berle Show. In 1958 he had major surgery. In 1958 he starred in a television pilot called Ben Blue's Brothers, in which he played four different parts. The show did not get picked up by a network, but the pilot was seen in 1965. In 1964 he was indicted by a federal grand jury on six counts of tax evasion for the non-payment of more than 39K USD (approximately 321K USD in 2020) in income taxes from the nightclub he operated, the Merry-Go-Round, in Santa Monica, California. The case was contested for five years, before he pled no contest to a single count of evading corporate tax. He was fined 1K USD, with the payment suspended. He also had a recurring role in Jerry Van Dyke's television series Accidental Family in 1967. His film roles included many cameo appearances. In It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963), his role was the pilot of the Standard J-1 biplane that flew Sid Caesar and Edie Adams, and he played Luther Grilk, the town drunk, in The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming (1966). His other film appearances included small roles in The Busy Body (1967), A Guide for the Married Man (1967) and Where Were You When the Lights Went Out? (1968). He made one of his last television appearances in Land of the Giants in 1969. He was also seen the following year in the Dora Hall vanity syndicated television special, "Once Upon a Tour". Ben Blue died in Hollywood, California at the age of 73. He was interred in the Hillside Memorial Park Cemetery in Culver City, California. After his death, his career papers covering 1935 to 1955 were deposited in the Special Collections at the University of California, Los Angeles Library. September 12, 1910: Aesthetics: Performing Arts: Premieres: Theatre Premieres: Musical Premieres: Symphony Premieres: -- Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 8 In E-flat Major, one of the largest-scale choral works in the classical concert repertoire, premieres in Munich, Germany's Neue Musik-Festhalle with a chorus of 852 singers and an orchestra of 171 players, with Mahler himself conducting the Munich Philharmonic. The last of Mahler's works that was premiered in his lifetime, the symphony was a critical and popular success. Because it requires huge instrumental and vocal forces, Mahler's Symphony No. 8 is frequently called the "Symphony of a Thousand", although the work is normally presented with far fewer than a thousand performers, and the composer did not sanction that name. The work was composed in a single inspired burst at his Maiernigg villa in southern Austria in the summer of 1906. Mahler had been convinced from the start of the work's significance; in renouncing the pessimism that had marked much of his music, he offered the Eighth as an expression of confidence in the eternal human spirit. In the period following the composer's death, performances were comparatively rare. However, from the mid-20th century onwards the symphony has been heard regularly in concert halls all over the world, and has been recorded many times. While recognising its wide popularity, modern critics have divided opinions on the work; Theodor W. Adorno, Robert Simpson and Jonathan Carr found its optimism unconvincing, and considered it artistically and musically inferior to Mahler's other symphonies. Conversely, Deryck Cooke has compared it to Ludwig van Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 as a defining human statement for its century. Mahler's rehearsal assistant conductor for the premiere was Bruno Walter, German-born conductor, pianist and composer. Born in Berlin, he left Germany in 1933 to escape the Third Reich, was naturalized as a French citizen in 1938, and settled in the United States in 1939. He worked closely with Gustav Mahler, whose music he helped to establish in the repertory, held major positions with the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, Concertgebouw Orchestra, Salzburg Festival, Vienna State Opera, Bavarian State Opera, Staatsoper Unter den Linden and Deutsche Oper Berlin, among others, made recordings of historical and artistic significance, and is widely considered to be one of the great conductors of the 20th century. September 12, 1966: Aesthetics: Performing Arts: Premieres: Television Premieres: United States Television Premieres: -- The Monkees, an American television sitcom series that follows the adventures of four young men (The Monkees) trying to make a name for themselves as a rock 'n roll band, premieres on the NBC TV network. The show introduced a number of innovative new-wave film techniques to series television and won two Emmy Awards in 1967, including Outstanding Comedy Series. The program ended in 1968 at the finish of its second season and has received a long afterlife through Saturday morning repeats (CBS and ABC) and syndication, as well as overseas broadcasts. The rock and pop band band the Monkees, originally active between 1966 and 1971, with reunion albums and tours in the decades that followed, had as their line-up American actor/musicians Micky Dolenz, Michael Nesmith and Peter Tork with English actor/singer Davy Jones. The group was conceived in 1965 by television producers Bob Rafelson and Bert Schneider specifically for the situation comedy series The Monkees. The band's music was initially supervised by record producer Don Kirshner, backed by the songwriting duo of Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart. The four actor/musicians were initially allowed only limited roles in the recording studio for the first few months of their five-year career as "the Monkees". This was due in part to the amount of time required to film the television series. Nonetheless, Nesmith composed and produced some songs from the beginning, and Tork contributed limited guitar work on the sessions produced by Nesmith. All four contributed lead vocals to various tracks. They eventually fought for the right to collectively supervise all musical output under the band's name, acting as actors, musicians, singers, songwriters, and producers. Following the television show's cancellation in 1968, the Monkees continued to record music until 1971, after which the group broke up. A revival of interest in the television show came in 1986, which led to a series of reunion tours and new records. The group has reunited and toured several times since then with different line-ups (but always containing Micky Dolenz and at least one of the other original members) and with varying degrees of success. Jones died in February 2012, Tork died in February 2019 and Newsmith died in 2021. Dolenz is the last surviving member of the band. Unbeknownst to his mother, his father was already married to another woman, so she gave him her last name. However, upon seeing her last name of Carter on his son's birth certificate, Melvin scratched Carter out and wrote his own last name of White. He grew up in the Watts neighborhood of South Central Los Angeles, California He was the oldest of two children; his brother Darryl was 13 months younger. White grew up listening to his mother's classical music collection and first took to the piano, emulating what he heard on the records. White recorded 20 studio albums during the course of his career, but multiple versions and compilations were released worldwide that were certified gold, 41 of which also attained platinum status. White had 20 gold and 10 platinum singles, with worldwide record sales in excess of 100 million records, and is one of the best-selling music artists of all time. His influences included James Cleveland, Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, The Supremes, the Four Tops and Marvin Gaye. While undergoing dialysis and awaiting a kidney transplant in May 2003, White suffered a severe stroke, which forced him to retire from public life. He also suffered multiple seizures in his last few weeks. White's unstable health prevented him from receiving a new kidney, and he died at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles after suffering cardiac arrest, aged 58. September 12, 1943: #BOTD: #HBD! Maria Muldaur, American folk and blues singer, is #born Maria Grazia Rosa Domenica D'Amato in Greenwich Village, New York City. Maria Muldaur was part of the American folk music revival in the early 1960s. She recorded the 1973 hit song "Midnight at the Oasis" and continues to record albums in the folk traditions. She was the wife of musician Geoff Muldaur and is the mother of singer-songwriter Jenni Muldaur. Muldaur grew up in Greenwich Village, where she attended Hunter College High School. Muldaur began her career in the early 1960s as Maria D'Amato, performing with John Sebastian, David Grisman, and Stefan Grossman as a member of the Even Dozen Jug Band. She then joined Jim Kweskin & the Jug Band as a featured vocalist and occasional violinist. During this time, she was part of the Greenwich Village scene that included Bob Dylan, and some of her recollections of the period, particularly with respect to Dylan, appear in Martin Scorsese's 2005 documentary film No Direction Home. She married fellow Jug Band member Geoff Muldaur, and after the Kweskin group broke up, the two of them produced two albums. She began her solo career when their marriage ended in 1972, but retained her married name. Her first solo album, Maria Muldaur, released in 1973, contained her hit single "Midnight at the Oasis", which reached number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1974. It also peaked at number 21 in the UK Singles Chart. Later that year, she released her second album, Waitress in a Donut Shop. This included a re-recording of "I'm a Woman", the Leiber and Stoller number first associated with Peggy Lee and a standout feature from her Jug Band days. The title of this album is taken from a line in another song on the album, "Sweetheart", by Ken Burgan. Around this time, Muldaur established a relationship with the Grateful Dead. Opening for some Grateful Dead shows in the summer of 1974, with John Kahn, bassist of the Jerry Garcia Band, eventually earned her a seat in that group as a backing vocalist in the late 1970s. Around the same time Muldaur met and eventually collaborated with bluegrass icon Peter Rowan. The two became close, and she was chosen to be the godmother of his daughter Amanda Rowan. She appeared on Super Jam (1989), the live recording of the German TV series Villa Fantastica, with Brian Auger on piano, Pete York on drums, Dick Morrissey on tenor saxophone, Roy Williams on trombone, Harvey Weston on bass and Zoot Money, also on vocals. Around 1980, Muldaur became a Christian and released a live album Gospel Nights. In 1983 she returned to secular music with Sweet and Slow, a set informed by vintage jazz and blues. Muldaur continued to perform, tour, and record after her success in the mid-1970s, including a turn at the Teatro ZinZanni in 2001. Her 2005 release, Sweet Lovin' Ol' Soul, was nominated for both a Blues Music Award (formerly the W.C. Handy Award) and a Grammy Award in the Traditional Blues category. In 2013, she was nominated for a Blues Music Award in the Koko Taylor Award (Traditional Blues Female) category. In 2003, Muldaur performed at Carnegie Hall in the Tribute to Peggy Lee produced by Richard Barone. In 2018 she performed in Barone's Central Park concert Music & Revolution along with John Sebastian and others from her Greenwich Village days. In 2019, she received the Trailblazer award at the Americana Music Honors & Awards. Kennedy, 36, U.S. Senator and future President, marries Jacqueline Bouvier, 24, future First Lady, in a ceremony before 750 invited guests at St. Mary's Church in Newport, Rhode Island. The marriage is conducted by Archbishop Richard Cushing of Boston, at which he also read a special prayer from Pope Pius XII. The parish congregation of St. Mary's was founded in 1828, and was the first Roman Catholic parish established in the state. Richard James Cushing (August 24, 1895 - November 2, 1970) was an American prelate (high-ranking member of the clergy) of the Roman Catholic Church who served as Archbishop of Boston from 1944 to 1970, and was made a cardinal in 1958, created Cardinal-Priest of Santa Susanna by Pope John XXIII in the consistory of December 15, 1958. Cushing gave the prayer invocation at Kennedy's inauguration in 1961. The Cardinal also celebrated President Kennedy's funeral Mass in 1963 at St. Matthew's Cathedral, Washington, D.C., following Kennedy's assassination in Dallas, Texas. The day before the funeral, he gave a televised eulogy for the President. Cushing later defended Jacqueline Kennedy after her marriage to Aristotle Onassis in 1968. September 12, 1819: #DOTD: #RIP: Gebhard Leberecht von Blucher, Prussian German Generalfeldmarschall (Field Marshal), who earned his greatest recognition after leading his army against Napoleon I at the Battle of the Nations at Leipzig in 1813 and the Battle of Waterloo in 1815 (b. December 21, 1742) #dies aged 76 at his Silesian residence at Krieblowitz, Province of Silesia, Kingdom of Prussia, German Confederation (modern Krobielowice, Lower Silesia Voivodeship, Poland). After his death, an imposing mausoleum was built for his remains. When Krieblowitz was conquered by the Red Army in 1945, Soviet soldiers broke into the Blucher mausoleum and scattered the remains. Soviet troops reportedly used his skull as a football. After 1989, some of his remains were taken by a Polish priest and interred in the catacomb of the church in Sosnica (German: Schosnitz), three km from the now Polish Krobielowice. Napoleon, who died less than two years after von Blucher, characterized von Blucher as a very brave soldier with no talent as a general, but he admired his attitude, which he described as a bull that looks all around him with rolling eyes and, when he sees danger, charges. Napoleon thought of him as stubborn and untiring, knowing no fear. He called him an old rascal who would be always get up on his feet again and be ready for the next battle as, following a sound defeat, Blucher had, almost instantly, returned to attack him vigorously again. Generalfeldmarschall Gebhard Leberecht von Blucher, Furst von Wahlstatt (German: Prince Of Wahlstatt) was born Gebhard Leberecht von Blucher in Rostock, a Baltic port in northern Germany, then in the Duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. Gebhard Leberecht von Blucher, Furst von Wahlstatt (Sovereign Prince of Wahlstatt; first Graf (Count) Wahlstatt, later elevated to Furst (Sovereign Prince), was born in Rostock, the son of a retired army captain. His military career began in 1758 as a hussar (light cavalry) in the Swedish Army. He was captured by the Prussians in 1760 during the Pomeranian Campaign and thereafter joined the Prussian Army, serving as a hussar officer for Prussia during the remainder of the Seven Years' War. In 1773, Blucher was forced to resign by Frederick the Great for insubordination. He worked as a farmer until the death of Frederick in 1786, when Blucher was reinstated and promoted to colonel. For his success in the French Revolutionary Wars, Blucher became a major general in 1794. He became a lieutenant general in 1801 and commanded the cavalry corps during the Napoleonic Wars in 1806. War broke out between Prussia and France again in 1813 and Blucher returned to active service at the age of 71. He was appointed full general over the Prussian field forces and clashed with Napoleon at the Battles of Lutzen and Bautzen. Later he won a critical victory over the French at the Battle of Katzbach. Blucher commanded the Prussian Army of Silesia at the Battle of the Nations where Napoleon was decisively defeated. For his role, Blucher was made a field marshal and received his title of Prince of Wahlstatt. After Napoleon's return in 1815, Blucher took command of the Prussian Army of the Lower Rhine and coordinated his force with that of the British and Allied forces under the Duke of Wellington. At the Battle of Ligny, he was severely injured and the Prussians retreated. After recovering, Blucher resumed command and joined Wellington at the Battle of Waterloo, with the intervention of Blucher's army playing a decisive role in the final allied victory. Blucher was made an honorary citizen of Berlin, Hamburg and Rostock. Known for his fiery personality, he was nicknamed Marschall Vorwarts ("Marshal Forward") by his soldiers because of his aggressive approach in warfare. Along with Paul von Hindenburg, he was the most highly decorated Prussian-German soldier in history: Blucher and Hindenburg are the only Prussian-German military officers to have been awarded the Star of the Grand Cross of the Iron Cross. A statue once stood in the square that bore his name, Blucherplatz, in Breslau (today Wroclaw). https://store.earthstation1.com/waterloo-napoleon-wellington-blucher-steiger-plummer-welles-dvd.html

September 12, 2014: #DOTD: Ian Paisley, Northern Irish evangelical Protestant pastor of the Free Presbyterian Church, loyalist politician and religious leader of Northern Ireland, leader of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) from 1971 to 2008, 2nd First Minister of Northern Ireland from 2007 to 2008 (b. April 6, 1926) #dies of a heart attack in Belfast, the capital city of Northern Ireland, aged 88. His body was buried on September 15 at Ballygowan (from Irish Baile Mhic Gabhann, "McGowan's Townland'), a village in County Down in the North of Northern Ireland, following a private funeral. An obituary in The New York Times reported that late in life Paisley had moderated and softened his stances against Roman Catholics but that, "the legacies of fighting and religious hatreds remained." There was a public memorial on October 19 for 830 invited guests held in the Ulster Hall, a Belfast concert hall and grade A listed building which hosts concerts, classical recitals, craft fairs and political party conferences such as the large private rally Paisley and DUP members Peter Robinson and Ivan Foster held on November 10, 1986 to announce the formation of the Ulster Resistance Movement (URM), a loyalist paramilitary organisation whose purpose was to "take direct action as and when required" to defeat republicanism and bring down The Anglo-Irish Agreement that had set out conditions for the creation of a power-sharing government for Northern Ireland and gave the Irish government an advisory role on political, legal and security matters in Northern Ireland. Ian Richard Kyle Paisley, Baron Bannside, PC (Privy Council) was born Ian Richard Kyle Paisley in Armagh, a county town and city in County Armagh, Northern Ireland, and brought up in the town of Ballymena, County Antrim. His father, James Kyle Paisley, was an Independent Baptist pastor who had previously served in the Ulster Volunteers, an Irish loyalist paramilitary organisation founded in 1912 to block domestic self-government ("Home Rule") for Ireland, under Edward Carson, the unionist politician, barrister and judge who was the Attorney General and Solicitor General for England, Wales and Ireland as well as the First Lord of the Admiralty for the Royal Navy. Ian's mother was Scottish. Paisley saw himself primarily as an Ulsterman, who though despite his hostility towards Irish republicanism and the Republic of Ireland also saw himself as an Irishman, saying that "you cannot be an Ulsterman without being an Irishman". Paisley became a Protestant evangelical minister in 1946 and remained one for the rest of his life. In 1951 he co-founded the Reformed fundamentalist Free Presbyterian Church of Ulster and was its leader until 2008. Paisley became known for his fiery sermons and regularly preached anti-Catholicism, anti-ecumenism and against homosexuality. He gained a large group of followers who were referred to as Paisleyites. Paisley became involved in Ulster unionist/loyalist politics in the late 1950s. In the mid-late 1960s he led and instigated loyalist opposition to the Catholic Civil Rights movement in Northern Ireland. This contributed to the outbreak of The Troubles in the late 1960s, a conflict that would engulf Northern Ireland for the next 30 years. In 1970 he became Member of Parliament (MP) for North Antrim and the following year he founded the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), which he would lead for almost 40 years. In 1979 he became a member of the European Parliament. Throughout the Troubles, Paisley was seen as a firebrand and the face of hardline unionism. He opposed all attempts to resolve the conflict through power-sharing between unionists and Irish nationalists/republicans, and all attempts to involve The Republic Of Ireland in Northern Irish affairs. His efforts helped bring down The Sunningdale Agreement -- an attempt to establish The Northern Ireland Executive (January 1 - May 28, 1974), the power-sharing devolved government of Northern Ireland, and a cross-border Council Of Ireland in 1974 made up of 30 members from Dail Eireann and 30 members from the Northern Ireland Assembly that was to have "advisory and review functions". He also opposed the Anglo-Irish Agreement of 1985, with less success. His attempts to create The Third Force, the name given to a number of attempts by Paisley and the DUP to create an Ulster loyalist 'defensive militia'a paramilitary movement, culminated in the creation by the DUP of The Ulster Resistance (UR) (The Ulster Resistance Movement [URM]) in November 1986 in opposition to the Anglo-Irish Agreement. Paisley and his party also opposed The Northern Ireland Peace Process which included the events leading up to the 1994 Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA) ceasefire, the end of most of the violence of The Troubles, and The Good Friday Agreement of 1998, a pair of agreements signed on April 10 (Good Friday), 1998 that ended most of the violence of the Troubles. In 2005 Paisley's DUP became the largest unionist party in Northern Ireland, displacing the Ulster Unionist Party (UUP), which had dominated unionist politics since 1905 and had been an instrumental party in the Good Friday Agreement. From October 11 to 13, 2006, agreement resulted from multi-party talks held in St Andrews in Fife, Scotland between the British and Irish governments and Northern Ireland's political parties in relation to the devolution of power in the region that became known as The St Andrews Agreement. As a result of The St Andrews Agreement, the DUP finally agreed in 2007 to share power with republican party Sinn Fein. Thereafter, Paisley and Sinn Fein's Martin McGuinness became First Minister and Deputy First Minister, respectively, in May 2007. He stepped down as first minister and DUP leader in mid-2008, and was made a life peer as Baron Bannside in 2010. Paisley left politics in 2011. https://store.earthstation1.com/understanding-northern-ireland-the-historical-evidence-mp4-or-dvd.html

September 12, 1993: #DOTD: #RIP: Raymond Burr, Canadian-American actor and director known for his lengthy Hollywood film career and his title roles in television dramas Perry Mason and Ironside (b. May 21, 1917) #dies of cancer in Healdsburg, California, aged 76. He is buried at Fraser Cemetery in his birth town of New Westminster, British Columbia, Canada. After Burr's death from cancer in 1993, his personal life came into question, as many details of his known biography appeared to be unverifiable. In 1996, Burr was listed as one of the 50 Greatest TV Stars of All Time by TV Guide. A 2014 study found that Burr was rated as the favorite actor by Netflix users, with the greatest number of dedicated microgenres. Raymond Burr was born Raymond William Stacy Burr to father William Johnston Burr (1889-1985), a hardware salesman and mother Minerva Annette (nee Smith, 1892-1974), a pianist and music teacher. Raymond Burr was prominently involved in multiple charitable endeavors, such as working on behalf of the United Service Organizations. Burr's early acting career included roles on Broadway, radio, television and in film, usually as the villain. He had a regular role in Jack Webb's first radio show, Pat Novak for Hire (1949), and in Dragnet (1949-50) he played Joe Friday's boss, Ed Backstrand, chief of detectives. Burr worked on other Los Angeles-based series including Suspense, Screen Directors Playhouse, Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar, Family Theater, Hallmark Playhouse and Hallmark Hall of Fame. He performed in five episodes of the experimental dramatic radio anthology series CBS Radio Workshop, and had what is arguably his best radio role in "The Silent Witness" (1957), in which his is the only voice. In 1956 Burr was the star of CBS Radio's Fort Laramie, an adult Western drama produced, written and directed by the creators of Gunsmoke. He played the role of Lee Quince, captain of the cavalry, in the series set at a post-Civil War military post where disease, boredom, the elements and the uncharted terrain were the greatest enemies of "ordinary men who lived in extraordinary times". The half-hour transcribed program aired Sundays at 5:30 p.m. ET January 22 - October 28, 1956. Burr told columnist Sheilah Graham that he had received 1,500 fan letters after the first broadcasts, and he continued to receive letters praising the show's authenticity and presentation of human dignity. In August 1956, CBS announced that Burr would star in the television series Perry Mason. Although the network wanted Burr to continue work on Fort Laramie as well, the TV series required an extraordinary commitment and the radio show ended. Known for his loyalty and consciousness of history, Burr went out of his way to employ his radio colleagues in his television programs. Some 180 radio celebrities appeared on Perry Mason during the first season alone. His portrayal of the suspected murderer in the Alfred Hitchcock thriller Rear Window (1954) is regarded as his best-known film role. He won two Emmy Awards, in 1959 and 1961, for the role of Perry Mason, which he played for nine seasons (1957-1966) and reprised in a series of 26 television films (1985-1993). Perkins never disclosed how he got the disease. His urn, inscribed "Don't Fence Me In", is in an altar on the terrace of his former home in the Hollywood Hills. Anthony Perkins was born in Manhattan, New York City, the son of stage and film actor Osgood Perkins (1892-1937) and his wife, Janet Esselstyn (nee Rane; 1894-1979). He was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his second film, Friendly Persuasion, but is best known for playing Norman Bates in Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho and its three sequels. His other films include Fear Strikes Out (1957), The Matchmaker (1958), On the Beach (1959), Tall Story (1960), The Trial (1962), Phaedra (1962), Five Miles to Midnight (1962), Pretty Poison (1968), Murder on the Orient Express (1974), Mahogany (1975), The Black Hole (1979), North Sea Hijack (1980), and Crimes of Passion (1984). https://store.earthstation1.com/the-trial-1962-dvd-orson-welles-anthony-perkins-franz-k1962.html

September 12, 2003: #DOTD: #RIP: Johnny Cash, American singer-songwriter, guitarist, author and actor (b. February 26, 1932) #dies while being hospitalized at Baptist Hospital in Nashville of complications from diabetes at around 2:00 am Central Time, aged 71, less than four months after his wife June Carter. He is buried next to her at Hendersonville Memory Gardens near his home in Hendersonville, Tennessee. Born J. R. Cash in Kingsland, Arkansas, John R. Cash is one of the best-selling music artists of all time, having sold more than 90 million records worldwide. His genre-spanning songs and sound embraced country, rock and roll, rockabilly, blues, folk, and gospel. This crossover appeal won Cash the rare honor of being inducted into the Country Music, Rock and Roll, and Gospel Music Halls of Fame. Born in Arkansas to poor cotton farmers, Cash rose to fame in the prominent country music scene in Memphis, Tennessee, after four years in the United States Air Force. Cash was known for his deep, calm bass-baritone voice, the distinctive sound of his Tennessee Three backing band characterized by train-like chugging guitar rhythms, a rebelliousness coupled with an increasingly somber and humble demeanor, free prison concerts, and a trademark, all-black stage wardrobe, which earned him the nickname "The Man in Black". He traditionally began his concerts by simply introducing himself, "Hello, I'm Johnny Cash," followed by his signature song "Folsom Prison Blues". Much of Cash's music contained themes of sorrow, moral tribulation, and redemption, especially in the later stages of his career. His other signature songs include "I Walk the Line", "Ring of Fire", "Get Rhythm", and "Man in Black". He also recorded humorous numbers like "One Piece at a Time" and "A Boy Named Sue"; a duet with his future wife, June Carter, called "Jackson" (followed by many further duets after their wedding); and railroad songs including "Hey, Porter", "Orange Blossom Special", and "Rock Island Line". During the last stage of his career, Cash covered songs by several late-20th-century rock artists, notably "Hurt" by Nine Inch Nails, "Rusty Cage" by Soundgarden and "Rowboat" by Beck. https://store.earthstation1.com/classic-radio-commercials-old-time-radio-mp3-c3.html

September 12, 1973: #DOTD: Marjorie Merriweather Post, American businesswoman, socialite, and philanthropist, founder of General Foods, original owner of Mar-A-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida (b. March 15, 1887) #dies at her Hillwood estate in Washington, D.C. after a long illness, and is buried there. She left the bulk of her estate to her three daughters, Adelaide Close, Eleanor Post Close and Nedenia Hutton. Marjorie Merriweather Post was born in Springfield, Illinois, the daughter and only child of C. W. Post and the former Ella Letitia Merriweather. At age 27, following her father's death in 1914, she became the owner of the rapidly growing Postum Cereal Company, founded in 1895. She was subsequently the wealthiest woman in the United States, inheriting 20M USD (equivalent to 526M USD in 2020). She was a director of the company until 1958, and along with her second husband E.F. Hutton, began expanding the business and acquiring other American food companies such as Hellmann's Mayonnaise, Jell-O, Baker's Chocolate, Maxwell House, and many more. In 1929, Postum Cereal Company was renamed General Foods Corporation. While taking a voyage on her yacht, the Hussar, she came across the innovations of Clarence Birdseye in Gloucester, Massachusetts. Birdseye had developed a new way to preserve food by freezing it. Post foresaw the future advantages of frozen food, and bought Birdseye's company, which eventually became a success. Post used much of her fortune to collect art, particularly Imperial-era Russian art, much of which is now on display at Hillwood, the museum which was her estate in Washington, D.C. She is also known for her mansion, Mar-A-Lago, in Palm Beach, Florida. https://store.earthstation1.com/fred-allen-radio-mp3-dvd-complete-broadcast3.html
